Reaching a milestone like 20 years in business is no small feat in any industry, let alone outdoor recreation. In 2026, Northeast Whitewater proudly celebrates two decades of welcoming guests, guiding trips, creating memories, and growing from humble beginnings into one of Maine’s most trusted outdoor adventure outfitters.
From a Shed in the North Maine Woods
Every story has a starting point, and ours begins in nothing but a small shed in the remote outpost of Pittston Farm—many miles down one of the dirt roads that our rural region is so well known for.
Long before our growth, Northeast Whitewater began by building on all that we had–grit, passion, and a love for Maine’s wild and scenic rivers. Operating out of such a rugged and remote location was never easy, but it laid the foundation for everything that followed: a commitment to authenticity, hard work, and delivering a truly memorable experience no matter the setting.
Growing Through Greenville
As the company began to grow, so did the need for a more accessible home base. That next chapter brought Northeast Whitewater to Greenville, where we spent eight important years expanding our reach and building our reputation.
Greenville played a critical role in shaping the company into what it is today. First from the Bartley building, then to the old McDonalds and the Indian Hill Motel—where the real growth began. This proximity to Moosehead Lake and its steady flow of visitors made it the perfect place to connect with new guests and introduce more people to Maine’s incredible rivers, outdoors, and wildlife.
To this day Greenville remains an essential part of Northeast Whitewater’s story and continued success.
Putting Down Roots in Shirley
Eventually, the company found its long-term home just south of Greenville in Shirley. With more space and a quieter setting, but still close proximity to the Moosehead Lake Region’s best outdoor opportunities, Shirley has allowed Northeast Whitewater to continue growing while staying true to its roots.
It’s here that guests can fully unplug, settle in, and experience the kind of Maine adventure that feels both immersive and personal.
More Than Rafting: A True Maine Experience
While rafting remains at the core of what we do, Northeast Whitewater has always been about more than just the river.
The Moosehead Lake Region is one of the best places in New England for wildlife, and our moose tours have become a huge part of the experience. There’s something unforgettable about spotting a moose in its natural habitat—whether it’s your first time or your tenth—from the road or on the pond in a canoe.
These tours offer a different kind of adventure: quieter, slower-paced, but just as memorable. Together with rafting, they create a well-rounded experience that showcases the very best of Maine’s outdoors.
A Legacy Built on the Rivers
Of course, Maine’s best rivers are where it all comes together.
From the Kennebec River to the Penobscot, Northeast Whitewater has spent 20 years guiding trips that are equal parts thrilling and accessible.
But one river, in particular, helped put us on the map: Canada Falls.
As the only outfitter offering rafting trips on Canada Falls, this section of river has been a defining part of Northeast Whitewater’s identity. These trips are known for their low volume, but steep technical challenge, natural beauty, and exclusivity—and they played a major role in establishing the company in its early years.
Even now, Canada Falls trips remain a guest and guide favorite, and a point of pride.
Celebrating 20 Years
This anniversary isn’t just about looking back—it’s about celebrating how far we’ve come and all who have helped make it possible.
From our guides and staff to the countless guests who have joined us over the years, every trip, every season, and every memory has been part of this journey.
So mark your calendars, because our official 20 year celebration is going to be September 5th, following our annual Canada Falls trip—a fitting way to honor a place that has meant so much to our story.
Here’s to the Next Chapter
Twenty years after starting in a small shed in the North Maine Woods, Northeast Whitewater continues to do what it set out to do from the very beginning: create unforgettable outdoor experiences and share the best of Maine and the Moosehead Lake Region with every guest who walks through the door.
If you’ve been a part of our story—thank you. And if you haven’t yet, there’s no better time to join us.
And because we can’t stand to be complacent or stagnant, we have several new trips in the works to share with our guests in the coming year, so stay tuned for more details to come soon.
Here’s to 20 years of Northeast Whitewater—and the adventures still to come. We hope to see you soon.
