Program break down: Wilderness First Aid is comprehensive medical training designed for remote professionals or wilderness leaders who venture into remote and challenging environments. Add whitewater and we have 3 days of first aid on water whitewater classroom ideal for boaters, raft guides and whitewater enthusiasts. First aid training is handled on Swiftwater rivers utilizing our wilderness surroundings and whitewater equipment for an action packed, scenario driven program. We prepare students for emergency situations that involve prolonged patient care, severe environments (wet, cold and remote), using improvised equipment. Upon successful completion students accomplish American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications and American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue. Plan to work through real life scenario focused assessments regarding Systems Based Critical Thinking; Patient Assessment System; Circulatory & Respiratory Systems; Adult CPR; Basic Life Support; Spine Management; Musculoskeletal Injuries; Lifts, Moves, and Extrications; Dislocations; Allergies and Anaphylaxis; Improvised Patient Carries; and lots of Patient Assessment Drills.

Certifications

This course is scheduled for 3-days or 24-30 hours of instructional and practice time both on and off the water. Upon successful completion students accomplish American Red Cross Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications and American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue. Certification is valid for two years.

Equipment

River gear. Wetsuits available if needed. You will practice scenarios; guaranteed to get wet, a little dirty and be laying on the ground for short periods of time. Layering your clothing and bringing extra clothes along is essential. Good footwear for being on the water dealing with any weather.

Course Details

Northeast Whitewater Lodge, Campground & Guide Service is located on the southern tip of Moosehead Lake in Shirley, Maine. River venue TBA. Tent Camping and Bunk Style Yurts are available for rental during the course. Plan to bring snacks and a bag lunch each day. We are located between the lake towns of Monson and Greenville, Maine, where there are shops, restaurants, pubs and a grocery store.
